This rock, collected from Observation Hill Winter Quarters, is mounted on a block of wood from the false keel of the Discovery. The wood block bears the initials T.V.H for the expeditions naturalist, Thomas Vere Hodgson; he was affectionately known by the nickname Muggins on the expedition. Of note, Cape Hodgson (the northern most Cape of Black island) is named in his honour as he was the first, along with Reginald Koettlitz, Hartley T. Faffar and Louis Bernacchi to visit there.
