Item
Naval dress hat of Commander Morton Henry Moyes (1886 - 1981)
Description:
Bicorn hat and case belonging to Commander Morton Henry Moyes. Commander Moyes accompanied Douglas Mawson on the Australian Antarctic Expedition of 1911-1914. Given his previous exemplary polar experience, Moyes was appointed as the navigation officer on-board the Aurora when it rescued Shackleton and his men who were marooned during the Trans-Antarctic-Expedition in 1916. His last Polar excursion was with Mawson again during the BANZAR expedition but due to personal circumstances (or perhaps the terrible rift that had formed between the crew and scientific staff) he didn't return with the expedition for the second half.
Moyes was awarded the polar medal in both Silver and Bronze with a Bronze clasp for his contributions to Antarctic Exploration.
Provenance:
Purchased 2018 - Hat is named, Original receipts and cleaning papers confirm the hats provenance
