British Antarctic Expedition 1901 - 1904 bangle fashioned from old sledge runner (German Silver).
Description:
Thomas Vere Hodgson (1864 - 1926).
Hodgson was the Marine Biologist on the Discovery Expedition and was affectionately known as Muggins by his fellow expedition members.
This bangle was made as a memento for his sister Helen and has the Expedition logo engraved within a garter ('Discovery Antarctic Expedition 1901' and with 'Emperor Penguin emblem' to the centre), the arms are engraved 'Piece of Sledge Runner' and 'Western Sledge Journey 1903' and to the inside centre engraved- 'H. L. H. - T.V. Hodgson'.
Hodgson was one of the oldest expedition members and as such was exempted from sledging duties; this bangle along with another he gifted to friend were made during the expedition as souvenirs of his only sledging trip.
On his return to England he was appointed the Curator of Plymouth Museum and of note, Cape Hodgson (the northernmost point of Black Island in the Ross Archipelago) is named in his honour.
