Item
Byrd Expedition ocean current measurement bottle
Description:
One of 500 glass bottles that were made for the First Byrd Antarctic Expedition. It was intended that these bottles would be used to measure ocean current strength and direction by writing where the bottle was released into the ocean, inserting that location within the bottle, and recording where the bottle was then found. The few known examples all appear to be unused so it is unclear if these were used for their intended purpose or not (any information of found ones would be greatly received)
These bottles were made by the Owens-Illinois Glass Company, Ohio. The bottle has an embossed design of Byrd's plane and the words: "Byrd Antarctic 1928 - 1929 Expedition".
Dimensions:
Height 14.2cm
Provenance:
Purchased 2018
